University of Nottingham Launches £53 Million Programme for Cryogenic Hydrogen-Electric Propulsion

A Revolutionary Approach to Greener Aviation

University Invests in Groundbreaking Research for Sustainable Flight

The University of Nottingham has embarked on an ambitious £53 million research programme to explore the potential of cryogenic hydrogen-electric propulsion for aviation. This transformative technology holds the promise of revolutionizing air travel, reducing carbon emissions, and creating a more sustainable future for the industry.

Cryogenic hydrogen-electric propulsion systems utilize liquid hydrogen stored at extremely low temperatures (-253 degrees Celsius) as a fuel source. When combined with electricity generated by fuel cells, this system produces zero carbon emissions during flight. The efficiency of this technology is significantly higher than traditional jet engines, resulting in lower fuel consumption and operating costs.

The university's research team will focus on developing and testing key components of cryogenic hydrogen-electric propulsion systems. This includes advancements in fuel storage and delivery, hydrogen fuel cells, and electrical power systems. By overcoming these technical challenges, the team aims to pave the way for the adoption of this technology in commercial aircraft.
